Olympic Sponsors

2010 Winter Olympic Games have commenced and I don’t know about you, but advertisement (product placement or commercials) have really increased in the past few years. I am a firm believer that if you are marketing your company, you make sure your brand and mission statement matches your key demographic and be where your market is. In the case of commercials, you still want your company brand image to match the time slot to ensure a company hits the right market.

Olympic sponsors I find are a little all over the place. You have clothing companies like Hudson’s Bay and Roots sponsoring the athletes’ clothing and somehow McDonald’s is a proud sponsor…are athletes even allowed to eat a Big Mac?!

After the news of Tiger Woods’ affairs, many companies are now looking to insure their celebrity endorsers in case of bad media press and to protect their company losses. Heck, supermodels and celebrities are known to insure their body parts (can you say Heidi Klum’s legs and Jennifer Lopez’s rear end?) Why couldn’t insurance companies insure athletes?!

I think the match would make more sense than McDonalds. To be honest with you, watching the Olympic Games with my parents, commercials featuring McDonald’s breakfast made us crave the McMuffins.  The next morning, we actually went to McDonalds for the first time in years and got the breakfast sandwiches. My waistline did not appreciate this little journey to McDonalds. So I’m sure there are others who have done the same. So we know advertising during the Olympics could be worth its price.

I never understood how Michael Phelps could promote McDonalds when I highly doubt he would consume McDonalds on a daily basis – even with his high caloric diet. Athletes are still required to eat a healthy balanced diet when training.

Certain high profile Olympic athletes are sponsored by mobile and car companies. I guess companies want a celebrity or an athlete to endorse to gain favour from customers who idolize certain celebrity or athlete.

I would think that insurance companies advertising during the Olympics would make more sense. Olympics and Super Bowl are one of the highest rated shows and it would reach millions. Insurance companies can sponsor athletes or insure the cars that transport the athletes…Chrysler claims they sponsor the athletes’ travel vehicles. I think with many insurance companies advertising to the mass, Olympic Games would be the perfect venue. Sure it is expensive – but all marketing efforts can be expensive.

What do you think? Do you think it would work and be profitable if insurance companies decided to advertise their brand to the masses during high profile games like the Olympics?

Thank you for reading and leaving a comment. I try to be vague enough for people to think and comment upon. I also do not want to directly target specific companies – whether it is in a positive or negative perspective. I’m trying to be more diplomatic.
