Storm Proofing Your Home

Ah summer. You’ve finally shed your winter clothes, it’s nice and sunny (its warm too!) and school’s out. If you live near a park or have a backyard, it’s time to enjoy the nice weather. Heck, maybe you even want to go away to the beach or to your cottage with your family or friends. Either way, when summer comes around, so does the storm.

Everyone is subjected to some storms. Sorry but sometimes you can’t avoid it! But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared. That means you should storm proof your home as best as you can, especially when you decide to go away. Nothing too dramatic like boarding up your windows. Here are some tips:

  • Take down umbrellas that are outside your home (you’d be surprise how sometimes people forget to take them down and all of a sudden you see outdoor umbrellas across the street blown away, and most are bent and not salvageable)
  • Put away patio furniture and any statues…when the wind blows, you really don’t want anything to fly through the window
  • Clean your eave troughs every summer, spring and fall. You have no idea how that is the NUMBER ONE problem for foundation leaks
  • Turn off your water main off inside your home. It is usually in your basement

The summer is about having fun and enjoying the warm weather, but it is always good to know when storms are heading your way, you are well prepared to take it on. To be on the safe side, follow the above pre-caution when you are away on vacation, as you will never know what can happen in your absence.

Happy summer! :)
